Etymology
The Latin name alchemilla is derived from the Arabic term al-kymia, which describes the
natural philosophy of alchemy. The English name of the herb is derived from the shape of its leaves, which are reminiscent of the folds in early depictions of the Virgin Mary’s mantle.
